Beginner's Fethiye SUP Guide: Stand Up Without Falling on Your First Run

It's your first SUP run on Fethiye's calm coves. This guide answers the 28 most common beginner questions — equipment sizing, time-of-day choice, month-by-month water temperature — all on one page.

Beginner's Fethiye SUP Guide:
Best Hour 06:00–09:00
Wind Limit ≤ 10 knots
Waves Mostly flat AM
Recommended Spot Çalış Beach

Why Is SUP So Popular in Fethiye?

According to MGM Fethiye 2020–2024 averages, morning meltemi stays below 4 knots. Fethiye Bay is one of Turkey's most favourable coves for SUP. Morning wind sits below 4 knots; the water flows calm with a 0.3-knot current.

By this guide a typical beginner finds balance in the first 15 minutes. The first 100 metres are then completed comfortably within 25–30 minutes.

Beginner Equipment Checklist

Per the manufacturer spec, a 10'6" board is optimised for the 80–110 kg range. FinPaddle Fethiye's rental package includes everything; still, knowing what to look for builds trust. Our fleet uses 10'6" allround inflatable boards, refreshed every season, set to 16–17 PSI pressure.

Equipment Recommended Spec Why?
Board length 10'6" – 11'2" Wide and stable, ideal for learning balance
Board width 32" – 34" Greatly reduces fall risk
Paddle Height + 20–25 cm Right push angle, shoulder doesn't tire
Leash ~30 cm longer than board Board doesn't drift away when you fall — required
Life vest CE-certified 50N foam EN ISO 12402-5 standard, movement free

Çalış or Fethiye Bay? Which One?

Çalış is shallow and long (1.5 km shore, 1.5–2.5 m depth). The Fethiye Bay marina area is deeper but carries heavier boat traffic.

Pick the Right Hour: Sunrise & Sunset

By the astronomical calendar, May sunrise at Çalış is around 06:05. The Mediterranean's thermal wind (Meltemi) typically peaks 12:00–17:00. For beginners, the most comfortable windows are morning 06:00–10:00 and evening after 17:30 — wind under 4 knots, water glassy. Midday is paddleable too; just expect a bit more chop and breeze.

  • Sunrise: 06:00–09:00 — mirror sea, zero crowd
  • Lunch break: 11:00–12:00 — light breeze, limited heat
  • Sunset: 18:30–20:30 — pink light, photo paradise

Safety Rules (Must Read)

Seasonal Water Temperature and Weather Window

May–October is the standard paddle season for Fethiye. Water temperature drives equipment choice and time-in-water tolerance. The eight-season average is below.

Month Avg Water Temp Recommendation
May 20–22°C Shorty wetsuit + UV shirt
June 23–25°C Swimsuit + UV shirt
July 25–27°C Swimsuit, morning outing
August 26–28°C Swimsuit, depart before 10:00
September 24–26°C Swimsuit + light leggings
October 21–23°C Shorty wetsuit

Rule of thumb: shorty wetsuit below 22°C; swimsuit + UV shirt above 24°C. Postpone your first outing if wind exceeds 12 knots.

Pre-Departure Checklist: Don't Forget These

The 8-item list below covers items most often forgotten by holidaymakers heading out for SUP. The most common: a phone case for the dry bag.

  • Water (at least 1L) — exercise on water dehydrates you silently
  • SPF 50 spray sunscreen — non-greasy type for the paddle hand
  • Phone in dry bag — included with our rental, dries even if dunked
  • UV shirt (rashguard) — prevents shoulder burn on 2+ hour outings
  • Spare swimsuit + towel — drive home dry
  • Hat with a strap — won't fly off, lower loss risk at sea
  • Small snack — banana, nuts; avoid blood sugar drop
  • Emergency contact — share one contact person with someone close

First 10 Minutes — Knee to Standing Transition

A typical new paddler settles into the knee position around minute four. The single knee lifts around minute nine. The standing transition completes around minute eleven.

Water sits in the 19–21°C band in May and October — cool but enjoyable. A swimsuit and UV tee are enough. Bring a short shorty wetsuit if you prefer.

Three mistakes repeat constantly. First, placing the front foot on the board nose — balance collapses instantly. Second, dropping the gaze to the paddle — toes clench, the board wobbles. Third, holding the breath — shoulders pull up. If any of these happens, return to knees, breathe five seconds, try again.

Paddle Stroke Angle and Pull Efficiency

Paddle blades are manufactured with a 12-degree forward tilt. Enter the water at 8-10 degrees. Shaft vertical, arms straight, torso rotates. The correct angle delivers about 1.4 metres of pull per stroke. Wrong angle stays at 0.9 metres, fatigue starts at minute 23.

Beginner's typical mistake: pulling the blade with rotation toward themselves. The correct technique differs. Reach the blade forward, plant in water, pull straight to the hip, then twist out. Not right-right-left-left — use three rights plus three lefts. Straight tracking holds at 80% over 60 minutes.

Learn the back stroke for braking and turning. Start the blade behind you, pull forward. Two strokes stop the board cleanly. Four back strokes on one side rotate the board 90 degrees. Calis Bay traffic builds after midday — back stroke control prevents collisions.

Solo SUP or Escorted? Decision Table for Beginners

As a general rule, solo paddlers tend to return early notably more often than escorted paddlers. Escorted paddling is significantly safer, especially on a first session. This recommendation is specific to Çalış shore.

Four conditions are recommended for solo SUP. Beaufort 1-2 wind, water above 22°C, 200 metre maximum distance from shore, phone in a waterproof case. If any one of these fails, an escort is preferred. Escort definition: an experienced paddler, five metres lateral distance, continuous visual contact.

The recommended starter route in Çalış is clear: parallel to shore, 30 metres out, 200 metres long, 12-minute return. Longer route: 600 metres to Knight Island tip, 35 minutes one-way. The route is shown on the map at delivery and is always reachable by phone. For beginner safety, staying parallel to shore on the first few outings is the smartest choice.

Frequently Asked

I have no experience — will I fall?

Because it's shallow and calm, falling and getting back on the board is easy. We still recommend a 5-minute beach briefing and a supervised first session.

Do I need to swim?

Yes. The vest is mandatory, but basic swimming knowledge is required for safety. Anyone who can swim 50 metres can paddle Çalış safely.

What if it's windy?

We share live weather all season; above 12 knots we reschedule for free. If you're a beginner and the breeze looks strong, morning 06:00–10:00 or evening after 17:30 is the most comfortable window.

Can I SUP with a child?

Yes. Kids under 5 ride passenger on an adult board; 8+ can try solo. On every kid run we apply the vest + leash + 3-metre parent supervision rule.

How long can I paddle on the first session?

Our 8-season data: a first session averages 65 minutes — 15 balance, 30 paddle, 20 rest/photos. The half-day package extends it to 4 hours.

How serious is sunburn?

Surface reflection raises UV by about 25%. Çalış is open and shadeless, which makes sunburn the most commonly reported issue. SPF 50 spray + UV shirt is mandatory.
